Say whaaaat?
I didn’t know what Turks and Caicos was, either.
It’s a place. Lovely place. White sand beaches, palm trees, gorgeous vacation venues.
From visittci.com:
The Turks and Caicos Islands are located 575 miles (925 km) southeast of Miami, Florida, roughly midway between the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic. The country is an archipelago of eight major islands and many small cays, and is located in the tropical Atlantic Ocean.
Turks and Caicos is also the name of a film—a good film, starring heavy-hitter wonderful actors: Bill Nighy, Christopher Walken, Helena Bonham Carter, and Winona Ryder among others. I’m recommending it to you.
We happened to pick up Turks and Caicos at our library. Directed and written by David Hare, I’d call it a maverick piece. Made for PBS, it’s not at all like the low-brow flash-bang of usual American television. It’s also not easily categorized: not quite a spy film, not a thriller, not an action film. It’s kind of an intellectual spy / action film. Sort of!
Here’s what it’s about:
It’s a rendering of the real life complexities of the super rich exempting themselves from the rules everybody else lives by—with a subtle, interesting spy plot as the orienting device, and compelling relationships to boot. Oh, and a good ending. That’s always a selling point, for me!
I love Bill Nighy—his subtle humor, his gentlemanly ways, his “I see you through all that” gaze. Any movie that can make Bill Nighy the star is tops with me.
Oh, and the film has subtitles available, a key movie attribute as life goes on. Seeing and hearing at the same time helps comprehension substantially!
Why should you see it?
The moral message is good, but I’m recommending Turks and Caicos for the subtlety, the wonderful acting, the daring to make a good film for less money, one that’s outside the box. It’s a kind of creative daring that I find exciting.
I’d call it “innovative, creative, thought-provoking, and entertaining.”
Reason enough to see it? It will appeal to the creative maverick in you!
Coach’s Challenge:
Get your hands on Turks and Caicos and take it in. It won’t rock your world, but it will tickle your creative curiosity. After all, you never know what might fire that passion of yours. It might even make you think about vacationing in the Caribbean! By the way it is part of a trilogy: Johnny Worrick Trilogy. Here are the titles:
