I have two completely different things to share with you today: a quote and a wake-up call.
Many of us struggle with how to flow with challenging relationships (like family) in our lives. This quote about the rules for being a flock simplifies the complex in a beautiful way. I shared it in my book newsletter this week—it really resonated for me, wanted to pass it on to you.
“You and me, we will be like a flock,” said Bird. “To be a flock, there are three rules. First, you have to stay a little bit apart. But the second rule is: never too far apart. And third, you all have to be going in the same direction. When you follow those rules, you’re a flock.”
—Summer and Bird, by Katherine Catmull
Now for the wake-up call, in the form of a movie: Lions for Lambs, starring Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, and Tom Cruise, made in 2007. Here’s the trailer.
I’m telling you about it not because of its content—which was considered “nothing new” about the Iraq conflict. I’m telling you about it because of an “aha” I had while watching it—especially the scenes with Redford, his students, and his class.
This was a movie that engaged my mind. It made me remember that when I was in college, I loved a good debate. Not for the argument, but for the chance to share visionary ideas and ideals, and to discuss how the world might be positively impacted. Those were the days, of course, when anything seemed possible.
The movie tickled a part of me that has been asleep. I’m inviting you to watch the movie to see if it wakes some part of you.
One of the dangers, as the years pass, is letting those parts of us that seem to not result in anything productive, or that seem to do nothing but get us in trouble, go by the wayside. But those might be vital parts of your being. “Waking them up” might mean bringing more vitality into your being, into your life.
Coach’s Challenge: Share with me something from your life: a quote and a wake-up call, perhaps. What’s got you thinking and feeling deeply lately?
