Last week I introduced Martha Beck’s 4 steps to magic:
- Wordlessness
- Oneness
- Imagining
- Forming
Did you give Wordlessness a try? Did you experiment with it, find how easy it can be to get there, and how difficult it is to stay there? I had at least one person let me know she picked up the Martha’s book at the library: Finding Your Way in a Wild New World, and got excited enough to order a copy of her own.
Martha gives specific directions and numerous ways of accessing Wordlessness – a simple one is to focus on your senses. Notice what you smell, then while holding that awareness, notice what you see, taste, hear, and feel. In order to layer the input, you have to drop out of your logic mind and into Wordlessness.
Now. Are you ready for step 2? Let’ s move on to Oneness, understanding that Wordlessness is the foundational layer. You can’t skip it. Oneness is just what it sounds like – connecting to all that is.
Here’s what I do: I imagine pouring my essence into the earth, merging with the grass, the fields, the flowers, the trees, and so forth. For me it produces even more relief than Wordlessness. It takes the weight of life’s responsibility off my shoulders. I remember, while I am in that state, that it isn’t about me. Well – it is, but not in an individual sense. It’s about the essence of life’s positive energy. Ultimately, Beck names it as “love.” She’s right, and she waits because that word is so overused people back away from it. Whatever its name, it is the web of energy that connects us all – to each other, to the earth, to the animals, to life itself.
You School of Service folks, this is the state you are striving for 24/7. You are naturally built for it, and when you’re in it, you help others access it as well.
Here’s an example of Oneness in action: I watched the movie Seabiscuit this week. The final lines of the movie are something like (I’m paraphrasing): “Everyone thinks we found this broken-down horse and healed him. But actually, he healed us. And maybe we healed each other in the process.” It makes me cry every time. When you give yourself over to Oneness, there’s no telling what miracles can happen.
So these are the first 2 steps of magic: dropping under the layer of verbal, descriptive thought, then connecting to Divine energy, (love). It’s sort of like diving into the sea and floating there, watching a whole new world beneath the surface.
Coach’s Challenge: Give these 2 steps a try this week. Notice how they affect your relationship with the animals in your life. How are your intimate relationships affected? Is communicating easier? Leave a comment letting me know what you discover!
