What makes Anne of Green Gables so beloved?
When you find a film, book, or other kind of story where the protagonist inspires you and worms their way into your heart, I think it’s worth taking a look at why, and seeing what behaviors or attitudes you can adopt from them as you traverse your own life adventure.
I’ve been watching the complete DVD mini-series set of Anne of Green Gables, starring Megan Follows, Colleen Dewhurst, and Richard Farnsworth. It has so much joy in it: lightness, hilarity, laughter, tears—so much heart! Watching it is excellent exercise for your emotions.
6 qualities worth adopting from Anne of Green Gables:
- She’s completely herself. Her quaint, educated way of speaking is completely authentic, not put-on at all! Incredibly sincere—longs for a “bosom friend” and holds her in high esteem once she finds her—loyal and loving.
- She never lets “what will people think” enter her mind when she sets her mind on doing something, She’s determined, stubborn, ambitious, and bright.
- A die-hard romantic—reading and acting out “The Lady of Shalott,” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson gets her in trouble repeatedly! She always sees extraordinary beauty in things, uses her amazing vocabulary to describe it, and her exceptional imagination to soak it in deeply. She approaches life expecting to be awed, in the best way.
- Expresses her feelings quickly and fully: from temper to delight, she never holds back. She speaks before she thinks—with the best of intentions, she puts her foot in her mouth often, but just as often charms others with her words.
- Knows how to apologize and mean it—in all the ways that count! This means she can make mistakes and apologize her way out of them—it’s part of what makes her so fearless. She understands the value of forgiveness, receiving as well as giving it.
- Generous with her love and expressing it aloud—adores her reality at Green Gables as only someone who’s known hardship can.
Anne lives, feels, and speaks boldly. She’s adventurous and brave. She’s always got her head in the clouds, and I love her for it! She knows how to use her imagination to help her through tough spots and glory in the good ones. She inspires me—I’d like to adopt a few of her ways…
