Finding Your Passion

Finding Your Passion

I’ve been in a bit of a slump lately.

I’ve lost my zing, my pizazz. In other words, my passion has slid out of focus—somewhere beyond easy accessibility.

Hence today’s topic: finding your passion.

It’s funny about that—people talk about “finding your passion” as if it’s a great mystery that is hiding purposefully. It’s rarely a mystery—most of the time we’ve brushed up against it in some form repeatedly—and if it’s hidden, it’s because we’ve let it go. However, we commonly let things pile up between ourselves and our passion. We do find ourselves out of touch with this essential part of our creative drive. It happens all the time when we give up on our dreams.

So how do you go about finding your misplaced passion?

One way is to pay attention to what moves you. It can come through any source: maybe a news article you read, or a fictional scene in a book. I’m often moved by movies. This week my husband and I attended a screening at our local library of four TED Talks. The one that made tears well up in my eyes is this one, entitled “Taking Imagination Seriously.”

It’s only ten minutes long; I hope you’ll watch it. Perhaps it will move you as well. From being moved, next you hone in on the why. For me, I am moved by the improbability and grace of Janet Echelman’s soft sculpture creations.

Janet’s presentation is proof that dreams are possible; that creativity matters, and that saying “yes” and refusing to give up can lead to something truly amazing.

Your creativity is invaluable. You must know this: decide it in your bones, and insist on doing whatever it takes to bring your visions to life. You’re not alone. I’m right here, walking the path with you.

Coach’s Challenge: Notice what moves you this week. Put on your “intuitive sleuth” hat, and discern why you are moved. Think about those clues in relation to the empty spot where your passion should be. Let those clues stir the pot, and watch the path to your passion open before your eyes!

Leave me a comment letting me know what you think of Janet’s TED Talk!
