I’m sharing this movie with you for the sheer joy of it!
The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman, is not to be missed.
It’s the story of P.T. Barnum (of Barnum & Bailey’s Circus)
If you don’t already know I love musical theater, I’m telling you now: I love musical theater! I watched this movie twice in the space of three days, and the music has stayed with me since. This film has the driving, contagious energy of youth—yet it has a broad appeal.
Watching the special features adds to the fun:
The special features bring to life how collaborative the film creation process was—among director, music and songwriters, choreographer and cast. I especially prized a short video of the real dance couple that created the trapeze love song dance “Rewrite the Stars.” Their joy is visceral and contagious. Lovely.
The moral of The Greatest Showman, about not needing everyone to like and admire you in order to feel successful, is Universally relevant, in my humble opinion.
How much is real?
The movie made me want to know more about Mr. P.T. Barnum, in real life—how much of the storyline is true? I haven’t yet found out.
Bringing it to the stage…
I understand this has no stage equivalent, (yet), as it was made directly into a film from a script outline. But it sure has the potential for becoming a Broadway musical hit! I’d love to be in it someday, if I’m not too creaky to dance up a storm. Of course I want Hugh Jackman’s part, and that’s not so likely
Circus Family
I really prized the way they portrayed the circus members—as a “family” of performers who until then, had been isolated oddities. It’s a great way to carry the message of empowering differences. At the same time it speaks to how we all need community and “home” among others who love and accept us.
My Piper Pan and Her Merry Band books are also built around a family of oddballs. It’s a theme I resonate with.
My favorite line:
“No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else!”
Coach’s Challenge:
Just one thing: Get your hands on The Greatest Showman and enjoy it!
