3 Tips to Open Your Creative Flow

3 Tips to Open Your Creative Flow

I’ve just begun another round of my 90-day program, The River Thrive.

Wherever you are in life, and whatever you are wrestling with, it’s designed to buoy you up and carry you along with more lightness and joy.

“Why the strange name?” you may ask. I use river metaphors throughout the program because it’s incredibly useful to liken the flow of your life’s energy to that of a healthy river. You need healthy inflow, and healthy outflow.

Some of my program participants come in feeling “stuck in the mud,” “cast adrift,” “all washed up,” or “at a loss.” One told me she’s been feeling like she’s been “dragged along the bottom” of a river for a while.

When things are not going well, it pays to first attend to making sure there is healthy energetic and emotional release in your life. In terms of a river, it’s the “outflow.” You have to empty what’s there to make room for something new.

We’re in the first two weeks, where we establish 3 foundational habits for wellbeing. I call is “Release the River!” These are also 3 tips to open your creative flow.

Habit #1: Write your Morning Page. Adopted from the genius of Julia Cameron’s Morning Pages, writing at least one page of mind-dump each morning, helps empty the repetitive mind chatter, identify your feelings and gain clarity.

Habit #2: Daily Walk, at least 15 minutes. Moving the body moves the emotions. Doing it without distraction or destination allows you to tune in to what ‘s there, and you can let it flow out.

Habit #3: Your Nightly W.A.G. Notes. Taking 5 minutes at the end of each day to identify something that made you feel wonder, take note of a new awareness or insight, and list 5 things you’re grateful for, sets the tone of appreciation that generates positive energetic inflow.

The program is designed as a home study—you can start it anytime, no need to wait for a new round to begin. It does have a community element, so doing it with someone you know can add to the fun, but you’ll be joining a community either way. A community of creative souls who care about generating positive energy in their lives.

Coach’s Challenge: Pick one of the 3 foundational habits—the 3 tips to open your creative flow, and implement it this week. Notice the difference it makes in tuning in and tuning up! And check out The River Thrive. You can try out the free 7-Day Creative Challenge to get a taste of what it’s like.
