Tonight I watched the movie The Blind Side, starring Sandra Bullock. It’s based on a true story—Sandra’s no-nonsense performance won her an Oscar for best leading actress in 2010. One of the take-away messages of the film is the life-altering experience of having someone who’s got your back, 100%, no matter what. Put another way: the power of being loved unconditionally.
Tell me, who’s got your back?
It’s something we all need—and sadly something many never experience. Being able to love unconditionally is right up there with enlightenment—almost a super-human power. The truth is, in my opinion, it’s a brilliant gift to receive from another human, but it isn’t something we can necessarily expect.
So where do we find this most necessary of things, if not from other people? From the Divine. This is perhaps the single most important reason to develop your relationship with the Divine—to experience unconditional love; to gain visceral knowledge of someone “having your back,” no matter what.
I take the need for a spiritual life very seriously, and with it the need for broad-mindedness. We each have our own route to the Divine, and whatever its face or name, it offers something we can’t find anywhere else.
Last weekend I was fortunate enough to take a Shamanic Journeying workshop. In it we were introduced to our Power Animal, and our Spirit Teachers—messengers of the Divine. In essence, we got to find these beings that have our back, 100%.
Whatever name the Divine holds for you, whatever its face, I wish for you the experience of knowing without a shadow of a doubt that someone has your back. The visceral knowledge of being loved no matter what.
It’s a whole lot easier to treat yourself with unconditional love when you’ve truly received it.
Coach’s Challenge: Find a window to the Divine this week, and bask in unconditional love. One place we often find this window is through our pets—they’re often a source of this pure, unconditional love. Another window can be through nature, through beauty. For some it’s through prayer, or meditation. Find one of those windows and bask! Leave a comment, tell us about your window.
